Charles worked out a pretty ingenious method to track lineage.
Here's how it works:
The Immigrant, John, has no number. He is the origin of the rest of us.
Each of his offspring is numbered in birth order, 1 through 12.
(I.e: Matthew is number 11, like I said.)
Each of Matthew's offspring has a number: 1 through 11.
I'm descendent from the 7th born, Andrew -
(So my "pedigree" starts out : 11-7; get it?)
If you were to take the time to trace me you would get:
11-7-1-8-2-1-6-4-1-4.
The number appearing in parenthesis after each name is that
individual's pedigree.
